What do I do if an exercise causes pain or other symptoms?

While the goal is to help you get out of pain with The Movement Program, it is possible that movements and positions will aggravate symptoms or seem to create more pain.

We never want you to push through pain or discomfort but there are a few things you can try to ease your body through this experience.

For example…

If it’s a static position that’s causing you pain (such as The Neutral Position or The Greatest Hip Flexor Stretch) that’s giving you trouble, you can play with the duration of the position.

In other words, pay attention to when the pain shows up for you.

If you notice the pain shows up right away… what happens when you stay in that position longer? Do the symptoms start to change?

If the pain doesn’t show up right away, when does it show up? At thirty seconds? At two minutes? Write down your answer and continue to monitor over the next several days to see if that duration starts to change.

If it’s a position that requires you to rotate your body in any way, reduce your range of motion to half of what you were doing before. For example, if you’re doing a mid back opener, open up to only half of what you were doing before. If this is still bothersome, scale back yet again until you meet your body in a place where this is more comfortable for you.

If it’s an active exercise that’s causing pain, attempt it with less intensity and potentially less reps. Find the easiest way for your body to complete the exercise.

Before giving up completely, it can be powerful to explore the options above. Be gentle and see if anything mentioned above helps change this experience for you.

If it does, continue this approach.

If not, that’s entirely okay! Let’s skip this movement for now and come back to it later on once your body has had some time with other movements and positions in the program, then reassess the situation.

It would be strange if you came into this program and your body could execute balanced and functional movement perfectly right away. We’ll get there!
